Air Operator Certificate, Air Operation Certificate, Air Carrier Operating Certificate — whatever it’s called by a particular regulator, it’s some of the most important documentation required to get an airline operating legally and safely, and to keep it that way. But what’s behind this commonly referred-to document? The latest in our ab initio primers explains.

At its most basic level, an Air Operator Certificate, usually referred to as an AOC, quite literally certifies that an operator meets the national and international legal requirements set out by its aviation regulator.

Requirements will vary by regulatory jurisdiction, including some that differentiate by the airline’s size, nature or intended operations.
