Are we about to enter the age of the truly ‘Connected Aircraft’? Dualeap believes that its ClearBox and data compression technology could be the catalyst to achieving that very goal
Toulouse-based technology entrepreneurs Dualeap believes its innovative data compression platform embedded into their ClearBox hardware will help the aviation sector facilitate the next technological leap forward – by offering real-time streaming of aircraft-related data.
The potential of live data streaming is enormous, offering exceptional opportunities to improve decision-making and enhance operational efficiencies across all airline operations.
Whilst sophisticated data-orientated systems have always been at the heart of technology developments over recent decades, the sheer volume of data created has grown exponentially, and there are significant constraints around how, where and what data can be exchanged between aircraft and ground-based systems.
With low bandwidths there has always been a hierarchy as to what information can be shared. Indeed many existing data transfer systems can only function once an aircraft is on the ground, despite the fact that that data may well have been collected in real time. Indeed those ground-based data collect processes have evolved over time, such that they often require multiple solution providers, platforms and infrastructures to enable data collection, processing, and analysis. Which can all amount to a potentially inefficient and overly expensive process.
Those systems that can and do take advantage of the limited bandwidths available during flight focus almost entirely (and quite rightly) on safety issues. Moreover those in-flight data transfers fall into a low volume – high cost category, and transfers often only occur at certain set intervals throughout the flight.
However Dualeap is confident that their ClearBox and its data compression technology is going to offer significant benefits to the aviation sector. ClearBox can stream live raw telemetry data, audio and video direct from all phases of flight, with compression ratios of up to 98% – without any data loss whatsoever.
And by lowering data transmission costs Dualeap will enable airlines to use affordable live data transmissions to enhance and expand current safety functions, as well as for in-flight route optimisation, live weather updates, to reduce fuel burn and carbon footprint, and even reduce costly turnaround times.
Moreover, ClearBox can become the platform through which a wide range of as yet unimagined intelligent data management systems can actively help airlines improve fuel efficiency, flight planning, performance monitoring, and compliance management. It should also help ground staff to be in receipt of accurate information and be better equipped to handle any number of operational situations.
Dualeap has been running a number of live trials to demonstrate the potential of ClearBox – and has gathered a number of influential fans.
Jonathan Potter, CEO – Commonwealth Commuter Airways (CCA), explains the benefits, saying: “Joining the ClearBox Pilot Customer Program creates a partnership that maximises operational efficiency while reducing associated costs across our entire fleet. The ClearBox system will provide CCA the ability to leverage real-time telemetry data on every aircraft, every hour, of every day.
“With ClearBox onboard our aircraft, CCA will be able to maximise aircraft performance, identify any inflight issues, and have technicians ready to resolve the issue when the aircraft lands. This will allow CCA to provide targeted technical responses to any issue, which will maximise fleet efficiency while minimising individual aircraft downtime.”
“The system will allow CCA to deploy a fleet of truly connected aircraft, which will improve our flight efficiency, dispatch reliability, operational safety, and reduce costs across our entire network.”
According to Jesper Allenberg, CCO of fellow ClearBox Pilot Customer Program participants Taillog EFB Systems:“Real-time data is pivotal for operators to effectively implement cost-saving measures and boost operational efficiency.”
Mr Allenberg states: “As we are utilising flight planning providers for the operational flight plan functions, Taillog can for instance enable real-time rerouting paths for optimal fuel consumption, as well as weather avoidance. In essence, our EFB will be connected in flight for accurate fuel and time monitoring, to name a few, allowing the pilots to focus on flying.
“Taillog is excited to enter into partnership with Dualeap, and this partnership is closing the gap of becoming fully digital, and will be a factor when operators are systematically changing towards a more CO2 and environmentally conscious operation.”
Finally, according to Olivier Arrindell, CEO at Ava Airways: “Being part of Dualeap’s Pilot Customer Program will provide Ava Airways with numerous tools to be one of the most technologically advanced airlines in the Americas. The ClearBox system allows us to determine the best course of action to make informed operational decisions quickly and effectively.”
Dualeap’s ClearBox solution is expected to pave the way for operators to truly realise the meaning of the term ‘Connected Aircraft’, both in terms of their operations and safety. With a number of partnerships already flourishing, Dualeap is expected to be able to offer a robust and well-rounded end-to-end solution and help operators around the world both digitise and optimise their fleets even faster.
